Remix Maker

Hello–

My very first blog post is in part about my tourney to become an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) expert, which means in my pursuit of education I have been lead to learn more about incorporating technology into what I am teaching and facilitating with students and persons with ASD. I just recently began a summer course at Michigan State University titled Adapting Innovative Technology to Education, know as CEP811 for short. Our first assignment is to create a media Remix about the Maker culture.

This whole idea of remixing and even the maker culture is new to me. First off, we were required to use a new type of web technology called Popcorn Maker–I have never heard of this website or app before. Basically, we need to find web clips, GIFs, videos, audio clips, and pictures to make a 60 second mini-video about what Maker culture is all about. Otherwise known as remixing and I have attached a link to my Remix video below for you to check out my first attempt at Popcorn Maker. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed completing this assignment. I, at first, was some what unsure about how I might be able to try and incorporate some of the ideas about maker culture into working with the students that I work with, however, after completing this assignment I have come up with some ideas about what I could do with students. A few of those ideas, including having students who like to create or figure out how things work “play around” with a few of the maker technologies that are out. I think that once students are able to see that they make things “happen” when they are making something will immediately attract them to working in this manner. This will play right into play-skill goals! I am looking forward to next week’s assignment when we get to “Make” something with our kits. As for using the Popcorn Maker technology, I found it very easy to use once I figured out how it worked. Meaning, at first I could not locate any type of media or information to add to my video. I then realized once I found something on one of the linked websites that I could go back to Popcorn Maker and search for the “tags” linked to the media and it would then become searchable on Popcorn Maker. I will use Popcorn Maker in the future for making videos and other visuals for education purposes.
